A car-jacker who pulled a woman out of her vehicle before driving it away has been jailed for more than three years.

Jerry Johnson, 27, was following the victim's white Seat Leon along the Stanground bypass, Peterborough, at about 00:30 GMT on 9 January 2022.

The victim’s car had a flat tyre and she was driving slowly when the vehicle with Johnson in it began tailgating her and flashing its lights.

When she stopped in a lay-by, Johnson pulled her out of the car. She managed to run off, but when she returned later that day the car had gone.

Sold under false name

A tracker fitted to the Leon showed it had been driven to Whittlesey about an hour after the robbery and then to Boston, Lincolnshire, the following day.

It was found with a car dealer, who told police he had bought it from Whittlesey in a transaction that turned out to have happened 12 hours after the car had been stolen.

It had been advertised for sale on Facebook under a false name.

By the time Johnson was identified as the suspect, police found he was serving time in jail for a series of burglaries in Lincolnshire, and they arrested him at Lincoln prison.

At Cambridge Crown Court on Wednesday, Johnson, of Aspley Road, Bedford, was jailed for theft for three years and three months.

Det Con George Corne said: "This was a horrifically frightening ordeal for the victim who was travelling alone at night and dragged out of her vehicle.

"She was then assaulted by Johnson who she assumed had pulled over to help her. We will continue to do everything in our power to put prolific and opportunistic thieves like Johnson before the courts."
