Woman subjected to 'serious' assault in Bridgwater

A woman in her 20s is in hospital after she was assaulted in a Somerset town.

Avon and Somerset Police said a man was arrested nearby after officers were called to a property in Clare Street, Bridgwater, just before 05.00 BST.

The woman was taken to hospital where here injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Police patrols are being stepped up in the area, but Insp Sarah Knight said there is not believed to be a "wider risk to the public".

Officers will be happy to speak to anyone who has concerns, she added.

The man, who is also in his 20s and known to the victim, was also taken to hospital for injuries which are also not believed to be life-threatening.

Anyone with information which could help the investigation into the attack has been asked to contact police.
