Large parts of Sheffield's Hillsborough Park have been left in darkness after lighting cables were damaged for a second time in four months.

Many of the lights around the park's main field and footpaths are not working.

Sheffield City Council said some some cables had been damaged during the Tramlines festival in July and, despite being repaired, had been impacted again by the recent rain.

The authority said cables in three locations in park had been affected and it was aiming to start repair work as soon as possible.

A statement from the council said: "Some lighting cables were damaged in Hillsborough park following Tramlines Festival in summer.

"Repairs have taken place on the damaged cables, including extensive new ducting to damaged cable runs, to ensure they comply with electrical regulations.

"Following these works, the lights were fully operational, however, due to recent wet weather, a further fault has been found requiring more repair works to be carried out in one location."

The council said the cost of the initial repairs was around £14,000 and was paid for by Tramlines.

They said the cost of the additional issues caused by recent bad weather are yet to be determined.
