Double yellow lines will be introduced on roads in Osbaldwick

Measures to stop drivers parking on verges and to tackle traffic issues have been planned for roads in Osbaldwick in York.

Double yellow lines will be introduced on the Osbaldwick Link Road, the Osbaldwick Village and Osbaldwick Lane junction and Murton Way.

Kate Ravilious, York Council's executive member for transport, said the restrictions aimed to strike a balance between supporting legitimate parking and tackling it where it is obstructive.

But Mark Warters, councillor for Osbaldwick and Derwent, said double yellow lines would not work and would push the problem to another road.

A council meeting heard the development of businesses near Osbaldwick Link Road had led to an increase in parking on the footpath.

The restrictions on Osbaldwick Lane were proposed in response to buses struggling to access a stretch of the road due to parking close to the junction, including for weddings and funerals at St Thomas' Church and on the opposite side of the road.

As well as double yellow lines, the measures also include a clearway - an area where vehicles cannot stop, even to drop off or pick up passengers - starting from just after the entrance to the Heritage House car park, running along Murton Way and ending shortly before the junction with Murton Garth.

Murton Way is also set to have double yellow lines extended to cover the junction with Beckett Drive in order to protect pedestrian access to tactile crossings and improve visibility for vehicles leaving their drives.

'Reasonable balance'

Warters said residents wanted action to be taken to tackle parking problems but he opposed the plans.

He said he feared "chaos is being deliberately created to further the aims of the council to impose residential parking permits into Osbaldwick".

However, Ravilious responded: "We're trying to find a reasonable balance between legitimate parking and obstructive parking while continuing to make sure we have access for Blue Badge holders, pedestrians and cyclists while preserving green spaces and protecting road safety."

The measures are set to be advertised in traffic regulation orders and would be approved unless the council received objections.
