Flight disruption at airport after runway closed

The airport has apologised to customers affected by the disruption

Flights were severely disrupted at Leeds Bradford Airport after its runway was shut for emergency repairs earlier.

It meant planes were unable to take off or land at the airport on Friday afternoon.

The airport said the runway had reopened by 19:30 BST but warned "some disruptions and delays" should be expected.

It also apologised for any inconvenience caused to passengers and advised the airport would be operating as normal on Saturday.

Sharing an update on X, formerly Twitter, the airport said: "The runway has reopened and the airport is resuming operations, though some disruption and delays are expected."

Earlier, a spokesperson said the closure "did not occur due to an incident".

"It is a minor repair to the runway surface but needs to be carried out immediately," they added.

A number of flights were delayed, diverted or cancelled.

The airport said customers who had booked fast track, lounge access or parking which they had not been able to use or who had overstayed should contact its customer care teams.

"We are responding on a first-come, first-served basis as quickly as we can," the statement added.
