A mother and daughter from Hull are planning to jump off a mountain to raise money for a charity that has helped their family.

Anne Duncan, 59, from Sutton-on-Hull, and her 28-year-old daughter, Sophie Ombler, will take on the challenge of paragliding at Les Gets resort in the Mont Blanc mountain range in France.

They hope to raise £1,000 for Help for Heroes to thank the charity for the support it has given to their husband and stepfather, Peter Duncan.

Mr Duncan served for 41 years as a navy medic, including spells in the Falkland Islands and Afghanistan, but suffered a stroke in 2022 which left him severely disabled and in need of 24-hour care.

Ms Duncan said the charity had helped Peter get physiotherapy and speech therapy, along with a wheelchair and other specialist equipment, and had provided him with mental health support to help him deal with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Ms Ombler said she would livestream her mum's launch from the mountain, 1,172m (3,845ft) above sea level before she takes off herself.

Ms Duncan said: "It's my 60th birthday this year and I wanted to take on a challenge. When I told Peter what I was planning, he said to just go for it.

"I've never done anything like this before, but, as a family, we want to do something to show our appreciation for Help for Heroes."

Help for Heroes said it had supported more than 31,000 veterans and their families, from all branches of the UK military.

A spokesperson said last year it had awarded a record number of financial grants to veteran households to help with the cost-of-living crisis and soaring energy bills.
