"Severe disruption" caused by "confusing" roadworks on a key route looks likely to continue until the week before Christmas.

The work, which began on 9 June, has resulted in long delays on the A38 south of Gloucester. Initially, developers said the project would be completed by Friday, but the estimated date has been pushed back to 19 December.

Developers Crest Nicholson said the work faced unforeseen issues including National Grid power and drainage problems.

Resident Andy Clarke said motorists in Hardwicke, Quedgeley and Kingsway are experiencing "severe disruption and safety risks" due to the confusing works.

"Motorists face long delays and confusion, while residents endure noise and restricted access to their homes. Emergency services have also struggled to reach those in need due to the congestion," he added.

The B4008 Bristol Road is closed at the A38 flyover to allow a new junction into a new 620-home estate to be built.

Gloucestershire County Council councillor Joe Harris, cabinet member for highways, said the authority recognises the A38 lane and road closures have been disruptive for residents and businesses.

He said: "We have been clear with the developer that closures must be kept to an absolute minimum and that diversion routes must be safe and suitable."

Electronic signs will be used during the night-time in December and access to the A38 Bristol Road at the junction of Pound Lane will be closed on safety grounds.

Councillor Harris said the council "presses" developers to "manage works responsibly" and to "minimise disruption".

A spokesperson from Crest Nicholson said delays have been due to external and unforeseen factors.

They added that dialogue with residents, informing them of any planned night closures, has been maintained throughout.
