Four sites have been shortlisted for the construction of a factory producing a fleet of small modular reactors (SMRs).

Kingmoor Park in Carlisle was revealed as one of the potential locations, together with sites in Tees Valley, the West Midlands and South Yorkshire.

Holtec Britain, which is behind the project, chose the four from a shortlist of 14.

Apart from Kingmoor Park, specific locations have yet to be revealed, but a final decision on where to locate the factory will be made in the autumn.

Andrew Seekings, CEO at Cumberland Council, said the authority was "thrilled" at the shortlisting of Kingmoor Park, which could received an initial investment of £1.3bn if selected.

He added: "The potential investment and creation of high-quality jobs would support regeneration and have a long term positive impact on our communities."

The selected site will be used to produce two to four reactors per year, valued at £1bn to £2bn each, for use in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

However, the factory will not deal with any nuclear fuel, Cumberland Council said.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen also welcomed the shortlisting, adding: "The potential for another 400 highly skilled, well-paid jobs for local people is another huge boost."
