Road safety awareness call in St Peter Port

Motorists are advised to take extra care in town during the Christmas period

St Peter Port Parish is raising awareness of road safety to motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The parish is working with Guernsey Police’s Neighbourhood Policing Team to talk to islanders about how to stay safe on the roads.

Advice will be issued on social media and leading up to Christmas, parish officials will also be out patrolling alongside police.

Advice includes pedestrians wearing high visibility clothing, using pedestrian crossings and urging cyclists not to use the High Street, Smith Street, and other pedestrian-only areas.

'Be safe and be seen'

Zoe Lihou, Constable of St Peter Port, said: “As the nights are drawing in, it is important to be safe and be seen. High visibility clothing and lights on bikes can help achieve this.

"Motorists and other users of our roads are reminded to kill your speed, not people...

“Constables and community officers will be patrolling the town area at peak times to ensure safety laws are being adhered to and advise and support where required.”

Sgt Andrew Smith said: “Our dedicated St Peter Port constable, alongside some of our operational officers, will be supporting the parish in the coming weeks to raise awareness about road safety in and around town...

"Our main message is to use the roads sensibly and be aware of what you’re doing. If we all look out for each other, we can avoid an accident happening around Christmas.”
