Market town's public spaces set for £800k revamp

Work has already begun on improvement works in Wellington

A Shropshire market town is set to undergo a transformation using funding of nearly £800,000.

Work is underway to make Wellington's public spaces more accessible as well as improve facilities like parking and smaller footpaths.

Alongside the investment, from Telford and Wrekin Council, the project is also supported by government and Wellington Town Council funding.

In addition to work on public spaces, the authority is making changes to Church Street including pothole repairs, resurfacing work, installing new kerbs and street furniture.

Improvements will take place in phases, the first of which began on 6 January from Station Road, Railway Bridge to Queen Street. It is set to finish at the end of February.

Phase two will take place from March to May, covering Queen Street to Vineyard Road.

Alongside this work, other developments are ongoing in the town.

The former YMCA building on Walker Street is set to become retail space and apartments.

While the Wellington Orbit cinema is due to undergo a major refurbishment to turn it into a cultural and artistic hub.

"These plans will make Wellington's public spaces more inviting and vibrant for everyone - whether you live, work or visit," said the council's leader, Lee Carter.

"It's about creating an attractive, thriving town that will support businesses and drive economic growth."
