A man has been arrested after a swan was killed in a park.

It happened in Riverside Park, Chester-le-Street, on Wednesday evening, Durham Police said.

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene and is in police custody, officers said.

Officers also thanked members of the public who "tried to intervene".

The swan was killed shortly before 18:30 BST, the force said.

Police have asked anyone with information to come forward to help with their investigation.
