Sailors in a riverside village have been warned that unlicensed boats could be removed and disposed of unless the issue is addressed.

The parish council in Chelmondiston, Suffolk, has identified eight dinghies where no annual licence has been paid for or displayed.

The boats are kept at Pin Mill Common beside the River Orwell, a popular spot for boating and also for tourists during the summer months.

The council has said the boats could be removed if their owners do not come forward.

In a social media post, external, the authority said it had done its best to contact the owners of the unlicensed boats.

It has now posted warning notices on the relevant boats, saying it reserves the right to remove and dispose of the dinghies at the end of April - unless their owners contact the Chelmondiston parish clerk.

A red plastic notice is stuck to the side of a white plastic dinghy. It is an official council notice that warns the boat owner that the unlicensed boat could be removed after the end of April. A strand of rope runs along the upper part of the dinghy, as part of the rubber fender. Image source, Chelmondiston Parish Council
