A theatre has announced plans to screen films following the closure of the seaside town's Cineworld.

Weymouth's only cinema, on New Bond Street, closed its doors on 30 December.

The cinema is one of several closed as part of a national restructure by Cineworld - including the cinema at Tower Retail Park, Poole.

Weymouth Pavilion said it planned to screen films alongside its programme of live theatre shows and had installed a 11m (36ft) screen in the theatre's auditorium.

The theatre said the loss of the cinema that had been open for 25 years had left a "void in Weymouth" and hoped it could bring back the cinema experience "the community are missing".

The theatre has yet to announce when screenings will start.

The Cineworld closure means the nearest cinema to the town is in Dorchester, about eight miles (12.8km) away.

The nearest Cineworld is almost 30 miles (48km) away in Yeovil.
