Heritage rail firm Pathfinder Railtours is to run its last trains this year with the retirement of boss Barry Cordell.

The business, based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, started more than 50 years ago when Tony Fielding and Peter Watts organised their first trip from Gloucester to Pwllheli, under the brand F&W Railtours - the name was changed in 1987.

Some of the last trips in November will visit the south-west, Shrewsbury and Chester.

The final trip, on 20 December, is expected to be on diesel train D1015 Western Champion.

Owner and chief executive Mr Cordell said: "Over the almost 30 years I have been involved with the company, we have achieved so much, but I now feel it is the right time to step back and retire."

Mr Watts said his involvement had been a privilege.

"When five years is a long time in the rail industry, to have achieved more than 50 years of continued operation, is truly remarkable," he said.

The firm said it was not insolvent and would be wound down properly, leaving no debts.

A spokesman said: "We are looking forward to running our final tours, ahead of bidding farewell, following the operation of the soon to be announced pre-Christmas charter in December."
