A murder investigation has been launched after the death of a man in Northampton.

Northamptonshire Police said it was called to a canal footpath behind Auctioneers Court at about 06:30 BST after East Midlands Ambulance Service discovered a man on a bench who had been fatally injured.

A cordon will remain in place at the scene, close to the River Nene, throughout Friday. The canal footpath is closed between Trenery Way footpath at Wathen Wigg bridge and Becket's Bridge and members of the public are advised to avoid this area.

A post-mortem examination will take place at Leicester Royal Infirmary to establish the man's exact cause of death.

Officers said there would be an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance and support to local people.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
