Police are treating a firebomb attack at a block of flats in Greenock as attempted murder.

The blaze broke out in the ground floor property on Sir Michael Street at about 02:00 on Tuesday - the BBC understands an item was thrown through the flat window.

A 67-year-old man was taken to hospital and later discharged.

The force said officers have carried out "extensive inquiries" and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward "no matter how relevant it may seem."

Det Insp Nicky Beattie said: "This reckless and despicable act could have resulted in a fatality, and is being investigated as an attempted murder.

"I am asking anyone who was in the area at the time who may have witnessed something suspicious to contact us.

"Similarly, I am keen to hear from anyone in the area with private CCTV or drivers with dashcam footage."
