A stretch of the A29 in West Sussex remains closed in both directions after heavy rain caused major flooding.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS) said the A29 Shripney Road in Bognor Regis will be closed “until further notice” between the Orchard Way and Oaklands Way roundabouts.

A crew is working to prevent flooding of a nearby electricity substation, WSFRS said.

The car park at a Tesco supermarket in the town is also flooded.

Sussex Police said officers were supporting the fire service and the Environment Agency to lower the water levels near the A29 and make the area safe for the public.

“Please stay away from the area while this work is ongoing,” a police spokesperson said.

The Environment Agency has issued more than 70 flood warnings ahead of the UK being hit by Storm Ciaran on Wednesday, including 15 across East Sussex and West Sussex.

These include in Chichester Harbour, Climping beach, Seaford, River Adur, River Arun and River Cuckmere.

On Sunday evening, West Sussex County Council said their offices at Durban House in Bognor Regis would be closed until further notice due to flooding.

Meanwhile, the Bognor Regis Recycling Centre remains closed to all vehicles due to flooding.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the council said.

A roof was ripped off a house and cars were damaged as a tornado hit Littlehampton

On Saturday, Priory Meadow Shopping Centre in Hastings, East Sussex, had to be evacuated after streets were flooded following heavy rain.

The roof of a house in Littlehampton was also ripped off as a tornado hit the area on Saturday night.

Sarah Horton, of the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation, was in Littlehampton on Sunday, and said the tornado was one of the strongest seen in the UK in recent years.

“It was quick shocking,” she told BBC Radio Sussex. “Only about 7% of tornados are this strength or stronger.

“We saw an awful lot of damage.”
