Two men have been jailed after a farmer was ambushed and had his quadbike stolen - while his sheepdog was still sat on it.

Bradford Crown Court heard how the victim was left on the floor with heart palpations and chest pains after he was attacked in Bingley on 17 January.

Macaulay Metcalfe, 29, and Jordan Faulding, 28, both admitted to their involvement in the case when they appeared at court earlier.

Metcalfe, of Sowerby Street in Sowerby Bridge, was jailed for 28 months, while Faulding, of Oakdale Drive in Bradford, was jailed for 13 months.

The sheep farmer had been tending his animals on land near Heights Lane when he got off the quad bike to close a gate, prosecutor Oliver Fraser told the court.

A Land Rover then pulled up and one of the occupants jumped out and got onto the vehicle.

The robber tried to punch the farmer and pushed him away before riding off on the machine, with the complainant's sheepdog still on it.

The dog was then pushed off by the rider as he drove away followed by the Land Rover.

Police used a tracking device on the machine to locate it in a wooded area of the district.

When they approached, they saw two people wearing balaclavas who tried to run off.

Faulding, who was already on prison licence for his role in a burglary conspiracy, was arrested after being found hiding behind a caravan.

He denied any involvement in the robbery and said he had been called in to remove the tracking device from the bike.

After his arrest Faulding assaulted a police officer and caused damage to a police cell.

He admitted handling the stolen quad bike, assaulting an emergency worker, possession of cannabis and criminal damage.

As well as his jail term, Faulding was ordered to pay a £187 surcharge.

Metcalfe failed to turn up at court for the first day of his trial and only entered his guilty pleas when he was persuaded to come to court on the second day.

He admitted the offence of robbery, although the court was told he maintained he was not the person who rode off on the quad bike.

Recorder Mark McKone KC said the Land Rover had been stolen from a driveway the day before the robbery and it had been obtained to commit serious crime.

Metcalfe also pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods in relation to the Land Rover, possession of cannabis and failure to surrender.

He was told he must also pay a £228 surcharge in addition to his sentence.
