Human remains have been found in the search for a woman after a house fire in Aberdeenshire.

The blaze took hold of the property on Harbour Road in the Seatown area of Gardenstown in the early hours of Thursday.

A man was taken to hospital and a woman was reported missing.

Police Scotland confirmed remains were found inside the house on Tuesday afternoon. Though formal identification has yet to take place, the family of the missing woman has been informed.

Police said specialist teams would continue to work at the scene and a joint investigation is being carried out with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

On Monday, the force set up a 10-day road closure at the site for its investigation.

Aberdeenshire Council said the closure was in the interests of public safety.

The area where the house fire happened is narrow, making access difficult.

Access will be provided for emergency services and vehicles needing to get to properties.
