A person has been badly injured in a "serious incident" that saw armed officers called to the scene in the north of the Isle of Man, police have said.

Isle of Man Constabulary said it was called to the Port Cornaa area in Maughold in the early evening.

The force said armed officers had "detained a person nearby" in connection with what happened.

No further details about the nature of the incident have been released.

There would be a continued police presence "for some time" and people have been advised to avoid the area, the force added.

It follows an earlier warning by police about a man they said should not be approached in the area.

People in the Laxey, Maughold and Ramsey were advised to secure their homes, while anyone flagged down by the man was told not to stop and contact police.

A Facebook post by the force featuring a description and image of the man was later removed.

Supt John Phillips said: "We would like to reassure the public that there is no ongoing risk or threat to the community.

"We would respectfully ask members of the community to refrain from speculating about this matter while the investigation remains ongoing."
