Blur's Dave Rowntree said he has never seen Oasis perform live

Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has said he is glad Oasis are back together and has labelled the legendary rivalry between the Britpop giants as "helpful media hype".

Tickets for the Oasis comeback tour sold out for all the dates the band announced they would play across the UK and Ireland next summer.

Mr Rowntree, who lives in Sussex, said he would "definitely go and see" Noel and Liam Gallagher's comeback and would be "first in the queue" as he had never seen Oasis live before.

"Blur and Oasis combined changed what the pop music genre meant, and that doesn't happen very often," he said.

Blur has had a number of hits, including Parklife, Country House and Girls & Boys, and in 2012 the group received a Brit Award for outstanding contribution to music.

The drummer, who ran as Labour's MP candidate in Mid Sussex in the general election, said people often overlaid "their particular prejudice" over the depicted rivalry between the bands.

"So people wanting to see England as a North-South divided country could lay that on there, people that wanted to view it in terms of class could do that," he said.
