Woman has life-threatening injuries after crash

A woman has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after a crash involving two lorries and a car on a motorway.

The crash happened at about 16:00 BST on Friday on the M49, near Hallen in South Gloucestershire, police said.

Police said four members of the same family, including a 33-year-old woman, a 38-year-old man and two girls, were admitted to hospital.

Two men were arrested following the crash, police said.

Appeal for witnesses

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving, driving while unfit through drink or drugs and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty. He remains in police custody.

Another man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the limit for a controlled drugs, police said. He was released under investigation pending blood tests.

The woman involved in the crash remained in a life-threatening condition, while a nine-year-old girl was receiving treatment for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

The man and the other girl were discharged following treatment.

Neither of the lorry drivers were injured, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The force appealed for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.
