Roman mosaic to go on permanent display

A Roman mosaic uncovered in what was the capital of Roman Britain is to go on display for the first time in 1,800 years.
It was discovered in the 1980s in Colchester when builders were working on a shopping centre. It was fully revealed outside a vape shop in 2023.
The project to permanently uncover the mosaic at Red Lion Yard and display it beneath glass is expected to be completed by the second half of next year.
The city council said it would "create a free, year-round attraction right in the heart of Colchester".

Work on the project in 2023 was paused when a high-voltage cable was found running over it.
Visitors will be able to look down at the mosaic in its original location in Red Lion Yard.
Colchester City Council leader David King said: "We're delighted that plans have been approved to reveal the Roman mosaic in Red Lion Yard through a glazed paving panel, allowing it to be enjoyed by the public for the first time in its original setting.
"Bringing this mosaic into public view is an important step in celebrating Colchester's story and supporting the local economy through heritage-led tourism."
