Off-duty police officer repeatedly punched in attack

The officer was inside a bar in King Street when he overheard the racial comments, police say

An off-duty police officer was repeatedly punched after challenging a man over racial comments in a Nottingham city centre bar.

The Leicestershire sergeant was inside a bar in King Street just after 20:00 BST on 7 October when he overheard a man making racial comments to another person.

When challenged, the man tried to punch the officer before the altercation moved outside.

Despite then being punched by four males, the officer's injuries were not severe.

Nottinghamshire Police has released a CCTV image of a man officers want to trace following the attack.

PC Koen Broers said: "The off-duty officer was enjoying an evening out with friends and deserves credit for intervening when he overheard a man using racist language.

“What followed was an unprovoked and despicable act which could easily have left him seriously injured."
