The retailer says it could create 50 jobs

Plans have been submitted for a new Aldi supermarket at a former quarry on the outskirts of a Derbyshire town.

The site at Harveydale Quarry in Dale Road, Matlock, is home to the former Derbyshire County Council offices in John Hadfield House, which have been vacated, along with a garage.

These buildings would be demolished to make way for the new supermarket and its car park, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The application to Derbyshire Dales District Council states it could create 50 jobs.

'Underutilised land'

If approved, the Aldi will cover a smaller footprint - 1,864 sq m, down from 2,424 - compared to the current buildings.

It will provide 92 car parking spaces, along with six disabled spots, seven parent and child spaces and four electric vehicle charging spots.

A document filed by the supermarket giant said it will use "previously developed land that has been underutilised for over four years, which is conveniently located at the edge of Matlock town centre".

"Given the absence of a discount food retailer in the wider Matlock area, it is considered that site represents an ideal opportunity for Aldi to deliver a foodstore for the town," it added.

A decision will be made by the district council in the next few months.
