A dental nurse has been jailed after smuggling a phone into a prison for use by an inmate.

Julia Derbyshire was employed as a dental nurse with Pearly Whites Dental in Brownhills and helped deliver clinics at HMP Featherstone Prison near Wolverhampton, the Crown Prosecution (CPS) said.

The 43-year-old from Warwickshire brought in the device, later found in the cell of a prisoner, and phone contact between the pair was established.

Derbyshire admitted an offence of conveying contraband into a prison and also pleaded guilty to possessing Class A and B drugs. She was sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court to six months in prison.

The nature of the relationship between the pair was not clear, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Ahead of her sentencing on Friday, Derbyshire, of Red Marl Way, had also admitted a charge of unauthorised transmission of image or sound by electronic communication from within a prison.
