Water supply has been disrupted at hundreds of properties in a Fenland town due to a leak, which may have also caused a sinkhole to appear in a road.

Anglian Water said customers in Walsoken and surrounding areas in Wisbech may have very low water pressure or no water at all.

Residents on Clarkson Avenue, Lynn Road, York Road and Sandringham Avenue said their supply had been interrupted since Monday morning.

The water provider apologised for the problems, saying the leak had been "located and isolated", and a fix was ongoing.

Barriers are currently in place on Clarkson Avenue after a sinkhole appeared

Lyncroft care home, a 53 bed-home, has had no water supply downstairs in the building since Monday morning.

"It threw us off for a little while. But we are hopeful we can get the full supply back soon," said Mel Cushen, customer relations manager.

Meanwhile, police and engineers have been at the site of a sinkhole on Clarkson Avenue, where barriers have been put in place.

Resident Marianne Kellick said: "We have been told it's a burst water main.

"We can't flush the loo, can't boil the vegetables or make a cup of tea.

"You can hear the water when you go stand near the sinkhole. It's worrying, so close to my home."

Anglian Water said customers in the Walsoken area of Wisbech had been affected

A spokesperson for Anglian Water said: "We are sorry that customers in Wisbech, Walsoken and the surrounding areas may have low pressure or no water at all today.

"This is due to a leak, which our teams have located and isolated. Our engineers are working hard to fix this as quickly as possible."

The water provider said it was investigating if the sinkhole was related to the leak.
