People have been invited to get free electric blankets tests at a fire station.

Jersey Fire Service and Jersey Electricity (JE) said islanders could bring blankets to Western Fire Station in St Brelade from 10:00 to 15:00 BST on Tuesday and Wednesday.

JE said any blankets which failed the test conducted by firefighters and electrical engineers would be thrown away. It added any blanket older than 10 years would be declared unfit and be disposed of.

Fire safety watch commander Toby Aubert said the aim was to keep people "warm and safe this winter".

The service said islanders who are unable to attend could drop their blankets off at Jersey Fire's headquarters in Rouge Bouillon by 17:00 on Monday.

A money-off voucher will be given to anyone whose blankets are deemed unsafe and disposed of, the fire service added.

Mr Aubert said people should always buy new, follow the manufacturer's instructions and check for damage before use when getting an electric blanket.

"Never use them damp, folded or with a hot water bottle," he said.

"How electrical blankets are stored and ensuring they are not plugged into overloaded sockets is also very important.

"Faulty or misused electric blankets can cause fires, but by following these guidelines, you can enjoy the warmth of your electric blanket while minimising the risk of fire."
