Two women have been arrested after a man was found injured by the side of a road in Rutland.

Leicestershire Police said it was called to the A606 Empingham Road, between Empingham and Stamford, at about 06:45 GMT on Sunday.

Officers found a 20-year-old man at the side of the road with a serious leg injury, and he was taken to hospital for treatment for non life-threatening head, leg and pelvic injuries.

A car believed to have been involved was later found abandoned in Oakham.

The women, who are both aged 20, were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving, drink-driving and failing to stop at the scene of a crash.

A force statement said they both remained in custody, adding it is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

PC Ellise Timmins, from the force's serious collision investigation unit, said: "While two people have been arrested, our investigation is very much continuing and I'm appealing for anyone who can help to get in touch."
