A woman has died in a fire which broke out at a flat.

The fire started at a first-floor property on Carlile Walk in Stockton, Teesside, shortly after 21:00 BST on Monday.

The woman was rescued by firefighters, but later died.

A spokesperson from Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "No one else was rescued from the property, however a firefighter suffered a burn to the back of their neck and received treatment on scene."

The fire service said three fire engines from Stockton and Thornaby were sent to the scene at 21:07, with the first arriving within five minutes.

The fire is currently being treated as unexplained, but its cause is being investigated.

Officers from Cleveland Police said the woman's family had been informed of her death.
