The cat that sits quietly near a feline memorial

People taking a walk in a park have started noticing a new visitor - a ginger cat that sits quietly at a memorial erected there in memory of another much-loved ginger tom.
The bronze statue of Garfield was placed in Ely Country Park in Cambridgeshire last year - a lasting reminder of the cat who became known as Mr Sainsbury's because of his love for the nearby store and its shoppers.
Now, Teddy has taken to frequenting Garfield's former stomping grounds - the store and the park.
Owner Hihine Lor said people who had seen Teddy there said "it's almost as if he knows".
The memorial was erected to Garfield in what is known as Ely's "pocket park" in October.
Garfield achieved social media fame by hanging out at his local Sainsbury's in the city, but died in 2019 after being hit by a vehicle in the car park.
He died before Teddy, who is almost three, was even born, but the young adventurer seems to be following in his predecessor's paw prints.
"Teddy seems to love Sainsbury's and, like Garfield, he gets into people's cars - it does worry me, sometimes," Ms Lor said.
"He is a hunter and a wanderer. He has tags and a GPS so I can see where he is, and where he's been, but I've lost count of the times people have rung me to ask if I have lost my cat.
"I say no, I know exactly where he is - but sometimes I do have to go and fetch him home."
As Teddy's antics became more known and photos were posted of him on social media, Ms Lor set up her own Teddy Facebook group, external.
"There are lots of photographs of Teddy at the park and the memorial," she said.
"I'd taken him there once to show him, then I took him home - but he kept going back and now he seems really comfortable there.
"He could go anywhere, but he's choosing these places - Sainsbury's and the park.
"It's almost as though the baton has been passed on."
