One person was taken to hospital following a "serious collision" on the A1(M) in County Durham.
Emergency crews were at the scene of the crash on Friday morning, between junction 62 for Carrville and junction 63 for Chester-le-Street.
The North East Ambulance Service said it was called at 03:22 BST to the southbound carriageway, and that "one patient was taken to hospital".
The road was closed in both directions, and was expected to "remain closed for several hours", Durham Police said.
Three paramedic crews, a doctor, a paramedic duty officer and a hazardous area response team were sent to the scene, the ambulance service said.
People were advised to take an alternative route around the road closure, external.
