A Derbyshire council is buying a fleet of new bin lorries in order to roll out weekly food waste collections.

Bolsover residents will also have new food waste containers delivered after the district council set aside more than £1m for the project.

The authority says there will be no changes to current black, burgundy and green wheelie bin collections when the new collections are rolled out.

No date for the start of the new scheme has yet been set.

The council says it is legally required to provide food waste collections by March 2026 at the latest, under the Environment Act 2021.

Councillor Anne Clarke said: “Introducing a brand new service like this to 40,000 households is a major undertaking and requires a significant amount of preparation work before the physical roll-out of the collections can take place.

“It takes a considerable amount of time to procure the right equipment and vehicles which is why we have agreed to this funding so preparatory work can start immediately."
