Stargazers as far south as Kent were treated to a dazzling appearance of the Northern Lights last night after the biggest solar storm in more than 20 years.

The lights, also known as aurora borealis, were spotted by onlookers from Reculver Towers and a farm in Tunbridge Wells, among other places.

The phenomenon appears as swirling curtains of pink, green and purple light.

The geomagnetic storm prompted the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to issue a rare solar storm warning.
