Fire service lets potential recruits 'have a go'
- Published
A fire service is hoping to attract new staff by inviting potential recruits to try out hose reels and ladder lifts at its stations.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said its "have a go" sessions would allow people to tour a station, try out equipment and speak to firefighters about the job.
The will also meet service fitness instructors to discuss the job's physical requirements.
Recruitment manager Dave Love said the day aimed to "take the mysticism off" some of the tests new recruits are required to pass.
"It's all about making it accessible for members of the community that wouldn't otherwise even think of applying," he said.
It had been a number of years since the service last recruited "wholetime", or full-time, firefighters "so this is a rare opportunity" for people to apply, he added.
Elysia O’Neil said she had come to the event at Carlisle East Fire Station on Saturday to "get a feel for it" before applying.
"Because it is such a long process and it is a big commitment," she said.
"It's gone well so hopefully I'll be successful in my application."
Damien Earl said the taster day was "absolutely fantastic".
"I was already keen beforehand but this has reaffirmed it," he said.
The fire service said there had been "overwhelming" interest in wholetime jobs.
Sessions had been moved to January to accommodate more people, it said.
Registration closes on 19 January with assessment and ability tests then carried out over a month.
Further selection and medical assessment days follow, with training for successful recruits starting in September.
"Have a go" days on 19 and 20 January need to be booked in advance, external.
