Police confirmed later on Thursday they were treating the man's death as murder

A cordon stretching about half a mile along the river was expected to remain in place overnight, they added.

Det Ch Insp Tom Woodward said: "We are now treating this investigation into this man’s death as a murder investigation.

“Although we are in the very early stages, we have a team of detectives working hard to try and establish the circumstances around what happened earlier this morning."

Anyone with information about what happened was urged to contact police.
