A fallen tree caused the Tyne and Wear Metro to be suspended between Monkseaton and North Shields on Wednesday morning.

The tree, which was brought down by Storm Joceyln, obstructed the overhead lines in Tynemouth early Wednesday, a spokesperson for Metro operator Nexus said.

Following engineer repairs, services between Monkseaton and North Shields were restored at 12:07 GMT.

However trains on the yellow line are still not running to timetable, a spokesperson said.

The service was initially suspended between Tynemouth and Whitley Bay in the morning before being extended to between Monkseaton and North Shields at 06:00 GMT.

During the disruption, Metro tickets were accepted on Go North East’s number 1 bus, as well as Stagecoach’s 317 bus and Arriva North East’s number 57/57A.

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for most of the north of the UK until 15:00 GMT Wednesday.
