Plans to upgrade the route have made a step forward

Plans to upgrade nearly 20 miles (31 km) of road between Inverness and Nairn to dual carriageway have taken a significant step forward.

Transport Scotland has published the documents required to complete the statutory process for dualling the section of the A96, including a Nairn bypass.

Should there be no legal challenges, the Scottish government would then be able to purchase land for the new road, before setting a timetable for works.

The creation of a bypass is hoped to improve road safety and reduce traffic jams in the town.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said the government was "absolutely committed" to improving the A96.

The dualling of the route between Inverness and Nairn is separate from the wider A96 corridor review, external currently being carried out by the Scottish government.

The draft outcomes of the review are anticipated in the coming months before any final decision will be made.
