Children in Guernsey are being invited to take part in a summer reading challenge.

The Guille-Allès Library, in St Peter Port, has challenged youngsters to read six books over the summer holidays.

They are offering stickers and rewards for each book completed, with a medal and free swimming voucher for children who complete the challenge.

Jodie Hearn, head of children and young people's services, said: "Reading sparks imagination and creativity, and the challenge aims to harness those creative thinking skills and build confidence in young readers during the school holidays."

Record number

She said she could not wait to "welcome them to the library and help them get stuck in".

The theme of this year's challenge, which runs until September, is Marvellous Makers.

The challenge is suitable for anyone aged three to 11 years old, but children of all ages are welcome to take part, the library said.

The library is working with reading volunteers from local charity Bright Beginnings to provide a "friendly face to meet and greet children, talk to them about the stories they’ve read over the holidays and listen to them read".

More than 2,000 children took part in last year's challenge, a record number according to the library.
