A63 Castle Street scheme enters next phase

The A63 Castle Street project in Hull city centre is entering its next phase, officials said.

National Highways said work would now focus on the Market Place and Queen Street junction.

The agency said pedestrian crossings had now been removed from the busy junction, and a new public walkway had been provided via the High Street underpass.

Engineers are also widening the entry and exit slip roads, with dedicated lanes for exiting at Market Place and entry on to Myton Bridge.

Castle Street is undergoing a £355m redesign that involves lowering the level of the road to create a split-level junction at Mytongate.

While the work has been taking place, there have been closures on Queen Street entry and exit slip roads. This work is due to be completed on 12 July, the agency said.

Overnight closure of A63 Castle Street:

To allow engineers to begin work at Market Place, the A63 will be closed overnight from 20:00 BST to 06:00 BST on the following days:

• Friday 12 July – westbound full closure

• Sunday 14 July – eastbound full closure

Market Place exit slip road closure

Work will then move to the Market Place exit slip road, with a new diversion implemented for this phase of the scheme.

The closure runs for nine weeks, from 15 July until 13 September.

Diversions

Drivers travelling eastbound wishing to access Market Place will be directed towards a "looped diversion" to Roger Millward Way roundabout to return westbound, leaving the A63 at the Queen Street exit slip road, then following High Street towards Liberty Lane.
