Robin Hood mosaic vandalised with graffiti

A mosaic of Robin Hood in Nottingham has been targeted by vandals, less than a month after it was unveiled to the public.

The Sherwood Tree of Knowledge artwork on Mansfield Road had been covered in graffiti on Monday morning, with a neighbouring hairdressers also affected.

Mike Douglas, who runs nearby Sherwood Business Centre, said footage from CCTV would be passed on to Nottinghamshire Police.

He also thanked local people for helping to clean up the graffiti hours after it happened.

The mural, which was unveiled on 23 June, was designed by artist Anna Dixon, with local businesses and neighbourhood groups contributing towards the £20,000 budget.

Mr Douglas said about 250 volunteers helped to create the artwork, with installation work starting back in February.

He said it was "amazing" to see the community rally round to clean up the damage in a matter of hours.

"We're only a week on from that fantastic launch, which hundreds of people turned up for," the 56-year-old said.

"Before I could grab a bucket and some cleaning stuff and go over to Sherwood, it had gone - the lovely manager in the Coop had seen it, she arrived early, and [went] out with a cleaner.

"It's so inspiring to be part of this Sherwood community, where it's about your resilience."
