A landlord who ignored a banning order and rented out a small outbuilding to a family of nine has been fined.

Peterborough City Council said housing standards officers first visited the property on Clarence Road in 2016 and found it to be hazardous and in "poor condition".

They served an order prohibiting the use of the outbuilding for residential purposes and said it was "too small to be reasonably occupied by an individual".

However, Peterborough Magistrates Court heard how Tariq Khan, 61, of Wilberforce Road in the city, continued to rent out the property to a family of nine. He was ordered to pay £4,800 in fines and costs.

Khan was found guilty of failing to comply with a prohibition order, having denied the charge.

Peter Hiller, a Peterborough First councillor and cabinet member for housing growth and regeneration, said: "This prosecution should serve as a warning to the small minority of landlords who put their tenants at risk and flout the law."
