The RNLI has raised nearly half a million pounds for a new lifeboat station.

The charity said Dart Lifeboat Station, in Devon, needs to move as the current base at Coronation Park is at the end of its lease.

An appeal launched by the charity is aiming to raise £1.2m to convert nearby Ferry View House, the original lifeboat station built in the 1800s, with modern equipment.

It said it had so far raised £490,000 since the appeal started last year.

The project to convert the old station has already received planning permission, the RNLI said.

Plans for the building include a new extension to house inshore lifeboats, first-floor level space and modern crew facilities.

Bob Gilbert, Dart RNLI fundraising chair, said its members were delighted with the support so far.

He said: "We’re eternally grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way so far, from people who have supported us locally at fundraising events, to those further afield who have donated to our appeal.

"It’s been a busy time for us organising fundraising events and celebrating generous donations, and there’ll be more opportunities to support our appeal over the winter months."

It is hoped work on the new building will begin in spring 2024, with fundraising to continue into 2025.
