An empty building which used to be a tool and equipment hire shop is to be converted into eight flats.

The plans for the former HSS Hire Shop on St Michael's Street, Shrewsbury, were approved by Shropshire Council.

The applicant said the shop closed two years ago and the development responded to the "identified need for private rented or owner-occupied small flats within the centre of Shrewsbury".

The project would keep the same scale with a "small uplift in height", but the building would not appear differently from the front.

The apartments are arranged across two floors, with four homes on each.

Planning officers had recommended the scheme for approval, but said two flats would be "subject to road noise" and suggested acoustic barriers along the front.

Shrewsbury Town Council did not object but said there was only one parking space at the site.

The applicant said there was additional off-road unrestricted parking along Derfald Street. But the town council said it would lead to "added pressure" for spaces on the road.
