Telford Theatre revamp plans go on display

Plans to remodel Telford Theatre are being put before the public in a two-day council exhibition.

The event at the theatre in Oakengates forms part of consultation over a scheme that would see the venue close for two years.

The cost of the project would be covered via the government's levelling-up fund, external.

Plans are on display on Monday from 14:00 to 19:30 GMT, and on Tuesday from 09:00 to 13:00 GMT.

The venue opened as Oakengates Town Hall in 1968, and has seen several incarnations and refurbishments as Oakengates Theatre and The Place.

Under the latest proposals,, external the main auditorium would increase its capacity to 750 and a second 98-seat space would be created.

Telford and Wrekin Council is also carrying out an online survey, external into the proposals, which is open until 18 December.

The plan sits alongside a separate scheme to redevelop the area surrounding the theatre.

Telford & Wrekin council said: "This project complements the Telford Towns Fund Oakengates Theatre Quarter project, turning a 1960s precinct into a modern and welcoming visitor experience."

Some businesses in the area which would be affected by changes have criticised the plan.
