An exhibition about pigeon racing will be unveiled at a library, as part of a national initiative designed to connect people to their communities.

Artefacts in the display belonged to the late brother of a member of the Memories of Bilston local history group.

The exhibition will be officially launched at the town's library on Thursday and is expected to be on show until December.

The history group was launched through the government funded Know Your Neighbourhood (KYN) programme, City of Wolverhampton Council said.

Wolverhampton Libraries is delivering a series of events as part of the KYN scheme, aimed at boosting volunteering opportunities and tackling isolation.

Memories of Bilston member Steve Guy said: "The artefacts in the display belonged to my brother, Derek, who died last year, and are a tribute to him, his hobby and the memory of pigeon flying in the Bilston area."

Reconnecting people

Senior library and information assistant at Bilston Library Charlotte Woodcock said starting a local history group, as a part of the KYN project, was "a no-brainer as Bilston has such a rich history".

She added it had been incredible to see the memories group grow each month, "reconnecting people from their school days as well as learning about various historic Bilston locations".

Mr Guy came to the first meeting in February with the idea to do a display, Ms Woodcock said.

The council said it had various regular groups on offer across its 16 libraries, including board game sessions, coffee mornings, bereavement social groups and arts and crafts.
