A post office in a North Yorkshire market town is to reopen after being closed for nearly two years.

Helmsley's post office was based in the Costcutter store on Bridge Street, but both closed without notice in 2022.

Residents had found the closure "really difficult", according to campaigners, as it had also provided a cash banking service.

The Post Office said it was "delighted" to be restoring a permanent post office in the same Bridge Street premises from the end of July.

Carolyn Frank, who is from Helmsley and represents the Federation of Small Businesses, said the announcement was "absolutely brilliant news".

"We always hear of local services, particularly in rural areas, closing down so this is just wonderful," she told BBC Radio York.

Ms Frank said thanks should also be given to the Black Swan Hotel, who stepped up to provide a part-time interim postal service last summer.

She added that a postal service, which also did cash banking, was vital for locals.

"It’s been really difficult, particularly for elderly residents who were having to take the bus or for the businesses who needed to send parcels," Ms Frank said.

"People have been travelling in all directions, for the banking services as well.

"The nearest banking centre has been Malton but there are no regular bus services in this area, there are large gaps between them.

"So if you’re relying on public transport, it’s been really difficult."

Ms Frank also said small businesses had been forced to close early to make special deliveries, when previously shopkeepers could nip out during the day.

"Two years feels like five years honestly, it feels like it’s been such a long time," she added.

Jagadeesh Kumar is set to offer post office and retail services at the former Costcutter shop on Bridge Street and is expected to open at the end of July.

Ian Murphy, Post Office network provision lead, said: "We are delighted to be restoring a permanent Post Office to Helmsley as we know how important a post office is to a community."
