Posh fans react to 'unbelievable' Wembley date
- Published
Fans called it “unbelievable” as Peterborough United booked a trip to Wembley with a 3-0 victory over Blackpool in the EFL Trophy semi-final on Tuesday.
They had lost 2-1 at home to the same side in League One three days previously, but were much the better side at Bloomfield Road.
Adi Mowles, 62, who has been going to Posh matches for more than 50 years, described the match as "brilliant".
Peterborough, who are unbeaten at Wembley, will face the winner of Wednesday's tie between Bradford and Wycombe with the final taking place on Sunday, 7 April.
"I went up to Blackpool for the match which was just a great day out," Mr Mowles said.
"They played brilliantly which was an amazing reward on a Tuesday night for all the fans who went along.
"I will most certainly be at Wembley cheering them on and I am confident we will win. We are absolutely on it - we are the best team in this division."
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson said he was "proud" of his team.
"I am delighted... fantastic performance and we thoroughly deserved to win," he said.
Another fan, Nick Jackson, 34, said he would be going to Wembley with about 15 of his friends.
“I saw my first Posh match when I was six years old," he said.
"I am currently in Paris for work, but I watched the [semi-final] match on my laptop.
"To get to the final is always a great feeling. The last time I saw them play there was in 2000 [Third Division play-off final win over Darlington], so I am very excited.
"Last night was one of the best Posh performances of the season. Darren Ferguson got the tactics spot on."
Jeanne Venters has been supporting Peterborough for 62 years.
The 76-year-old grandmother was at the Posh's ground on Wednesday and said fans were already clamouring for tickets.
Mrs Venters said: “It’s absolutely unbelievable and means a lot to us fans.
“I saw them play at Wembley 10 years ago [EFL Trophy win over Chesterfield]. Unfortunately due to mobility issues I won’t be going this time. But my grandson who is nine and an aspiring footballer himself will be going to support them.
"He is very excited.”
Posh fan Nilesh Patel, who will be a commentator for Peterborough Community Radio, external at Wembley, said it would be an "emotional moment" for him.
"We were exuding confidence. Blackpool tried to pressure us but we got our game going," he said.
"It was an amazing result in the end."
