A free party is to be held to unveil a new-look city centre street following its £2m regeneration.

Devonshire Street in Carlisle has been closed for five months as part of a project, which includes the installation of new outdoor seating, cycle parking, trees and plants.

Cumberland Council and contractor Eric Wright Civil Engineering Limited are holding a celebration on Saturday afternoon, in partnership with local businesses.

Mark Fryer, council leader, said he hoped the work would help to "promote positive outcomes" for the community and boost the local economy.

Saturday's free event, which will be held from 13:00 BST to 18:00, will see local bands performing on a nearby stage.

The project is part of a wider regeneration of the city, which includes the Carlisle Southern Gateway Project in English Street, expected to be completed by next spring.

The Carlisle Station Gateway Project involves pedestrianising part of Court Square, with work scheduled to finish in 2027.

Later this summer, work will also begin on the Market Square and Greenmarket Regeneration Project, which will see the war memorial relocated and an events space created.
