The man who was killed in a suspected hit-and-run in Dungiven, County Londonderry, at the weekend was 69-year-old Patrick Flanagan.
He was a well-known retired teacher from Derry city.
The police said they received a report at approximately 01:35 GMT on Sunday that a seriously injured man had been found in the Foreglen Road area.
"Officers attended, alongside colleagues from partner emergency services and the injured man was taken to hospital, where he sadly died from his injuries," said Det Insp Gillian Connolly, from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
"We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this incident and we believe at this time that Patrick was struck by a vehicle in a hit and run road traffic collision."
Detectives want to hear from anyone who was in the area between 01:00 and 02:00 am on Sunday and witnessed the collision, or captured dash-cam or other footage from the area.
